Emma sets sail on marine eXXpedition
Everyone’s first year of business is a challenging rollercoaster, but few include a month out of the office to sail the Pacific Ocean for charity. Resilient Coasts Ltd founder and
director Dr Emma Rendle has been selected out of 10,000 applicants to join 70ft sailing vessel ‘Travel Edge’ as volunteer crew from Easter Island to Tahiti for one leg (24 days) of the two-year, round- the-world voyage. Female-led eXXpedition aims to ‘make the unseen seen’ through a research voyage to collect data on the uncontrolled rate of marine plastic pollution and the impacts on ecosystem and human health. Emma will become an
ambassador for eXXpedition, trained to communicate on marine pollution through shift training sessions. Research into plastic and health
is desperately underfunded, yet Plymouth University is an international lead. Emma wants to improve education on land, in towns at the source. She said: “I moved back to Plymouth last year and set up a business, then got invited to crew for eXXpedition. It’s a huge
adventure, terrifying yet exciting – I am not a sailor! I left employment in 2017 to use my skills and knowledge more appropriately. My international work in development and UK consultancy is partly supporting the mission, and the remaining £8,400 I am hoping to raise through crowdfunding. I am also looking for corporate sponsorship. “Telling my story in person is the
best way to install understanding and awareness through presentation, photography and film. Anyone interested should certainly get in touch. I have been interviewed by BBC radio and TV, had a few press releases, and presented to businesses, schools, churches, Women’s Institutes and girl guides around the country. It would be great to hold plastic debates or give talks to local businesses, sharing my tales from the Pacific.” Emma joins eXXpedition 8 March
– 1 April. Resilient Coasts is a marine and coastal science consultancy specialising in climate change adaptation and resilience.
