CHAMBER FEATURE Working in

collaboration to clean up Devon

The Clean Devon Project was launched in February to tackle litter and fly tipping across Devon. The project has been initiated by a group of partners who will share expertise and intelligence and work with local and national businesses, local and parish councils and the Devon public to reduce litter and fly tipping across the county. The purpose of the partnership is

to improve the environment for residents, businesses, visitors and wildlife, through a coordinated multi-agency partnership to prevent, detect and deter fly tipping and litter in Devon, leading to a reduction in costs and crime, and benefits to health and society, tourism and the economy. The partnership is delighted to

welcome Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce as the Project’s newest partner. The other partners include the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, the CLA and the NFU, the Environment Agency, all Devon councils, the National Parks, the Federation of Small Businesses and Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service. In addition to collating and

sharing intelligence and information, the partners will run high profile multi-faceted awareness raising campaigns, collaborate to align protocols and procedures, coordinate clean ups and engage with relevant parties to further the reach and impact of Clean Devon.

34 Chamber Profile Spring 2020 Litter and fly tipping are putting

a major and growing financial burden on society. This environmental vandalism blights communities and has serious public health consequences. With the key roles that the world class environment, agriculture and tourism play in Devon’s prosperous economy it is critical that litter and fly tipping which impact seriously on these areas are tackled with an innovative, enterprising and collaborative approach. Dealing with fly tipping and litter in Devon is estimated to cost more than £7m.

Clean Devon’s first campaign

was launched on 2 March and runs throughout March. It is aimed at raising awareness of the Duty of

Care legislation, highlighting that as individuals we are all responsible for the waste we are getting rid of. By giving our waste to someone else, who then goes on to dump it as a fly-tip, we could be held responsible and face prosecution and a fine of up to £5,000 for fly- tipping if we haven’t taken reasonable measures to check that the company or person has a licence to carry waste.
