CHAMBER INVOLVE CHAMBER PATRONS: CITY COLLEGE PLYMOUTH
Businesses get onboard to help shape college’s curriculum
City College Plymouth has renewed its commitment to businesses with a fresh pledge to place the region’s employers - and their needs - at the heart of what it offers. The college’s Senior Leadership
Team (SLT) has a long history of working in partnership with businesses; however, as it maps out its vision for the future with a new strategic plan, the SLT and staff are working with businesses closer than ever before. The introduction of the new Apprenticeship Standards and a new education inspection framework has provided the college with the opportunity to closely review its curriculum to ensure it is delivering training that is meeting the needs of employers. Leading the college’s SLT is Principal and Chief Executive Jackie Grubb. Jackie’s career in education spans more than 30 years, and has seen her in the post of Principal at the City of Westminster College, Deputy Principal at Basingstoke College, and she has also worked as an inspector. The SLT also includes Ben Manning, Deputy Principal, and Lorraine Hill, the college’s Chief Finance Officer. Supporting the SLT are the
governors, who are crucial in the delivery of its first-class training. The college has strived to ensure
all sectors are represented by governors who are not only experts in their fields, but are committed to the growth of the region. Adam Croney, Debbie Taylor and Paul James have all joined the board of governors in the past two years. Jackie said: “The SLT is grateful
to be joined by governors with such an array of expertise who are committed to working with the college in supporting us in our vision. Their guidance will support us in creating the workforce of the future.”

Adam Croney Adam joined the board in 2019 and this was particularly special for Adam, who is a former City College student. Before joining Thomas Westcott in 2018, Adam spent seven years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he became a specialist in auditing and governance and has expertise in helping firms prepare for growth. Father to two young children,
Adam believes everyone in Plymouth should be able to enjoy a great career without being forced to relocate. Adam said: “City College Plymouth holds a special place for me as somewhere I learnt and developed. It also holds a very special place within the city – with this combined pride and responsibility felt by us at the college in ensuring that we remain aligned to the needs of local and regional business.”
Debbie Taylor Debbie became a governor in 2018 and was quickly invited to become the board’s Vice-Chairman. Debbie brings vast experience in healthcare, teaching and service improvement, and is fuelled by a passion to open up the healthcare sector. She started her career as a nurse, specialising in dental and facial conditions and injuries, and began teaching other clinicians and trainees, which led to her gaining a qualification in post-16 education. Debbie then moved into management, specialising in service improvement. Debbie said: “Much of my career
has involved working with people at universities or those who have gone through that process. I knew I wanted to do more with further

education establishments as I am passionate about opening up the healthcare sector. “A lot of potential is missed
because some people aren’t suited to a particular style of learning or they might be put off because they aren’t in a position financially, which is why I’m a big advocate of Apprenticeships, and I hope to help the college increase its partnerships with employers in the healthcare sector.”
Paul James Paul’s appointment came at the end of 2019. Chief Finance Officer of Delt Shared Services Ltd, Paul’s

background spans both the commercial and charity/social enterprise sectors, with expertise in finance, HR, employee development, commercial and manufacturing operations. Paul is a passionate believer that
businesses need to employ local people, however, training providers need to equip these people with the correct skills. Paul was pleased to become a governor and continue to implement his belief that, through strong partnerships, the region can safeguard and improve on its economic offering.
