FEATURE: APPRENTICESHIPS & TRAINING

An insider’s perspective on the benefits of apprentices

By Stacy Harrall-Phillips, Business Skills Assessor/IQA at GHQ Training

Apprenticeships provide opportunities for individuals to develop their skills and progress their careers. From an employer’s perspective, apprenticeships can help to reduce recruitment costs, improve productivity and increase employee satisfaction therefore decreasing staff turnover. Apprenticeships allow employers

to develop a skilled and qualified workforce specific to their company’s needs, either by upskilling current employees or by recruiting fresh talent. From 2017, the way

apprenticeships were delivered and assessed was reformed to address the skills shortages reported by many industries. The new apprenticeships standards were designed to be more rigorous and structured to improve not only the apprentice’s experience, but also to bring greater benefits to the employers and Industries as a whole. To encourage more employers to take on an apprentice, the Government offers a £1,000 incentive to small businesses that employ an apprentice aged 16-18 years old (subject to eligibility). At GHQ Training, we pride

ourselves on matching the right apprentice to the right employer. We work alongside businesses to deliver flexible, high quality training that enables individuals to develop their skills whilst supporting the commercial objectives of their employers. From a personal perspective, I

started my career as an apprentice at GHQ Training, where I have built and furthered my own skills which then gave me the opportunity to progress within my career. Now as a Business Skills Assessor and Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) at GHQ Training, it’s a great pleasure to be so heavily involved in delivering apprenticeships, supporting, and watching apprentices succeed. My learner Olivia Paterson, at

Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, is a brilliant advocate for the Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship. I have enjoyed seeing Olivia progress both personally and professionally to become a valued member of the Team. I look forward to continuing the close partnership between GHQ Training and the Chamber of Commerce as well as working with Olivia as her assessor.

Spring 2020 Chamber Profile 27 CASE STUDY

Olivia Paterson (pictured), aged 19, started her level 3 Business Apprenticeship in January 2019 with GHQ training provider. This is an 18-month programme and due for

completion in October 2020. Olivia started her apprenticeship in a different workplace to the one she’s in now and gained some experience there but unfortunately, after seven months, the company were unable to facilitate any of the apprenticeship roles any longer. Consequently, Olivia felt that she would have to consider other options. Olivia said: “I had concerns about how I would

‘My team really

have been one of the best support systems for me’

be able to progress with my qualification. Stacy Harrall and the team at GHQ were so helpful and supportive in not only how to move forward with my qualification, but also advising me on all the other options that are available to me. “The main reason that I wanted to complete this apprenticeship

was to continue to study and gain as much experience as I can.” Stacy managed to set up an interview with Helen Hart at Devon

& Plymouth Chamber of Commerce in July of 2019 and shortly after, Olivia was offered the job. Olivia has gained the value and importance of partnerships, particularly within the Chamber. Also, Olivia has learnt the value of a great team and how it has supported her personal and professional development. Olivia added: “Within my day-to-day work at the Chamber

I am supporting a variety of work streams across the team which include marketing, membership and events administration. This has given me a wealth of skills and experience. My team really have been one of the best support systems for me and I am grateful to them for taking me on and teaching me so much. “I have found that taking a joint approach by working in

partnerships, adds such value as it utilises all of the individual skills of people, supports a shared vision, supports shared goals and objectives and everyone gains from the partnership. “This apprenticeship is giving me all of the skills and

experience to undertake the administration role and the confidence to grow.”
