Bassenthwaite Primary School Bassenthwaite, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 4QH

and

At Bassenthwaite School, we are very proud of the out of classroom learning experiences we provide for our children. The Early Years children are encouraged to interact daily with their outside continuous provision, in all weathers and can be seen exploring their local environment with age appropriate activities. As they grow in confidence and experience, we venture further from the confines of the school yard, into the forest and learn about bush craft and fire lighting skills.

Nursery ~ John Muir Award ~

Rebecca, in Year 4 said: “Making bird boxes and using compasses to find a north-westerly position for them in a tree was my best John Muir task. This was part of our ‘conserve’ element where we aim to look after the wildlife presently at Bassenfell Manor and to encourage more.”

In addition to using our wonderful locality, it is important to ensure that Bassenthwaite pupils respect and conserve our area of outstanding natural beauty. As such, all our Key Stage 2 children undertake the John Muir award. The John Muir Award ensures subject areas such as geography, science, social studies, art, music, English, maths and IT, are embedded into cross curricular activity. It enables us to raise attainment and meet wider areas of learning, such as outdoor learning, personal and health education, sustainable development and citizenship.

Samuel, in Year 3 said: “Making bird feeders to encourage bird life to Bassenfell gardens was great, messy fun! We hope the birds like their treats!”

Molly, in Year 5 said: “The first John Muir of 2020 was ace! Food chain games and making our own mini beast hotels to encourage insects for the birds to eat was great fun!”

As the junior children come to the end of their ten week-long course they are now reflecting on the work they have covered. Pupils all received a Record Book to keep track of their involvement and will be presented with a certificate to recognise their achievements.
