The Government has released its plans for trading between the Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom once the Brexit process is complete. It comprises 557 pages of complex and detailed requirements, some of which are believed by some lawyers to contradict the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

Northern Irish exporters of goods will have an Exit Document to accompany every shipment, with 31 separate data fields to complete. Exports of goods from the rest of the country into Northern Ireland will be accompanied by an Entry Document, with 45 data fields.

As things stand, Oaktree has only two clients affected by this stuff. Fortunately, both of those clients have been exporting goods worldwide for more than ten years, so are well used to complex documents and have high quality shipping agents on hand to help them get their documentation right. However, many of the affected businesses will never have exported goods before and whatever anyone tells you, exporting to Northern Ireland will be no different in any meaningful way to exporting to
China or the USA in terms of documentation.
The lesson for every single business in the country which deals in any way with the European Union – in goods or services, exports or imports – is to make no assumptions whatsoever about how simple and easy things will be after we leave. In 2016, we were told that leaving the EU would be the “easiest deal in history.” If the last three-and-a-half years has been an easy deal, I’d hate to see a hard one!
There are going to be many losers in this process. Where there are losers, there are also winners. Keep a close eye on developments as they affect your sector and you have a much better chance of being a winner!
