COCKERMOUTH SCHOOL NEWS

Art and design is a hugely popular department within our school; it engages, inspires and challenges all our students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As students’ progress, they develop their critical thinking and acquire a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

The art department recently enjoyed welcoming nine of our local primary school’s Year 5 classes, to experience some art workshops inspired by the theme ‘It’s our World’.

The children were shown the work of Mark Hearld and we discussed: Why do artists make art? We agreed there are many reasons but often it is to draw attention to something and to start a visual discussion. We talked about how we are currently being shown lots of images in the media of how our world is changing and that usually the images are negative. We decided that our pieces were

going to be beautiful and positive; they would embrace what we have and show our passion to preserve our world. The children shared their ideas for how they could collage their pieces together and add text to them.

Several pieces were created during the session, inspired and informed by nature and colour including; watercolour suggested landscapes, mono-prints of feathers and etchings of an animal or insect of their choice. The children were amazed at the quality of their work with many of them commenting that they would gift their pieces as presents. It was an exciting week full of enthusiasm and ingenuity; the children and teachers left keen to put their new skills into practice. Capturing that enthusiasm at an early age and making art fun, enhances their creative potential and allows for imaginative investigation. Even mistakes can make a beautiful piece of art!
