PE OPLE

DAVID HAYLES

Popular Technical Manager David Hayles has been part of the Heatstar team starting as an office junior nearly 16 years ago. David focuses on technical aspects at home too, where he is often to be found fine-tuning his favourite recipes…

HOW HAS THE INDUSTRY CHANGED SINCE YOUR INVOLVEMENT?

Things have changed massively since I joined this industry in 1994. The approach has moved from simply getting a new pool built and up and running, to one of pool builders and owners being completely understanding of the need for their pools to be as energy efficient as possible and the technology and investment required to make that happen. From an environmental perspective things have changed massively, and for the better.

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST DAILY WORK CHALLENGES?

Managing what seems like an ever increasing workload. It is a real feather in our cap to be able to boast our own team of dedicated Heatstar engineers located throughout the UK, and being available to support them on a daily basis can be time consuming yet always rewarding. As Technical Manager, I am always on hand to offer advice, expertise, and technical support to our loyal customers.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FACING YOUR CUSTOMERS/THE INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW?

The technology relating to the heating and ventilation of swimming pools is

fast moving and highly legislated with careful thought and consideration needed to appease both EU and UK building regulations. There are far ranging and specific standards that should be met when builidng a new pool and the energy demands on an indoor pool should also be considered. At Heatstar we have always made sure we have taken all the necessary measures to ensure that these control regulations do not cause our clients any undue hassle.

HOW DO YOU SEE THE POOL MARKET EVOLVING IN THE SHORT AND LONG TERM?

These are both exciting yet challenging times within this industry. We have a very fast evolving energy market driven by both environmental and energy concerns, with energy efficiency not only socially responsible for the benefit of our planet but we are also all now starting to realise it has huge financial implications in saving costs when running a pool. I expect to see more attention paid to the investment of new technologies as we all try out best to improve our carbon footprint.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THE INDUSTRY RIGHT NOW…?

Make yourself available to try and learn something new every working day. Have the mindset of a student

and never think you are too old to ask questions or know too much to learn something new, as this industry in constantly evolving.

WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO ON YOUR WAY TO AND FROM WORK?

My son, talking non stop about everything football as I take him to school. He’s football mad and a ‘chip off the old block’ with football also being a big part of my life from a young age, right up to my recent retirement from playing local football. Time catches up with the best of us!

IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO INVITE THREE SPECIAL GUESTS TO A DINNER PARTY – WHO WOULD THEY BE?

Johhny Depp (for his Hollywood stories), Brian Cox (to learn something interesting and new), and George Best (for a good laugh).

HOW DO YOU MOST LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME OUT OF WORK?

In my spare time I like to play golf and to cook. I’m always looking for new recipes and new techniques to try out, which is so easy to do these days thanks to YouTube. I really like keeping my friends and family guessing what the next masterpiece—or disaster—will be.
