It is always a struggle to write a topical foreword for something that will be published

some way in the future, but this one is even harder than usual because between me penning this and you reading it we will have had a General Election, arguably the most important in a generation. Whether people end up voting on a single-issue or on comprehensive manifestos, the result will shape the future for businesses in the county and beyond. You can be assured that Devon & Plymouth Chamber will lobby hard to ensure that politicians from

all parties do all they can to ensure the best possible conditions for business in our area. Whoever ends up leading our country or representing you locally, we will work with them to tackle the key issues facing businesses here, including: reduced regulatory burden; a fairer rates system that cuts the hidden costs of doing business; incentives to invest in skills to help close the productivity gap; and enhanced regional infrastructure, both physical and digital. British Chambers of Commerce South West (BCCSW) has a critical part to play in this and we will ramping up our activities to ensure the South West is not overlooked by Government as it frequently has been to date. Away from the political turmoil, it is business as usual for many of our members who carry on with

their exciting work across a breadth of sectors, much of which you can read about in the following pages. 2020 is set to be an exciting year in so many ways, not least as the Mayflower 400 commemorations put us on the world stage and draws a spotlight onto a place from which people have exported talent and ideas that have shaped the world. Our pioneers may not be physically moving to the new world, but are still exporting knowledge and working practices that are continuing to make a difference 400 years after the Pilgrim Fathers (and Mothers) set off. Our journey is being showcased in The Box in Plymouth, the new archive, museum, cultural and arts

space opening soon that Arts Council England has described as the most significant cultural event for a decade in the UK. Combining this and Mayflower 400 with our commitment to becoming the UK’s first National Marine Park is our chance to proudly show that this is the most exciting place to be in 2020 and beyond. This Chamber of Commerce was formed 206 years ago by ship merchants on the Barbican who

realised they were stronger together - and the same is still true today. Together we can conquer new business worlds, so thank you for being a part of a Chamber that will hopefully continue working with its members for another two centuries to help them Connect, Grow and Succeed.
