FEATURE: CHARITABLE CAUSES, PROMOTION & PARTNERSHIP

Adventure Under Sail offer educational experiences aboard Pelican of London

Charity is making waves among Plymouth’s youth

Young people are the future of our planet and, since 2008, the charity Adventure Under Sail has successfully transformed the lives of young people, inspiring and engaging them through sail training on their magnificent tall ship Pelican of London. Sail training is a fun and exciting

adventure; sailing offshore as part of a team that is responsible for the running of the ship will open a whole new world of challenges, skills and discovery. You don’t need any previous sailing experience as the professional crew will teach you everything you need to know. You will meet new people and work together to set sails, steer, keep watch and even cook. Together you will meet the challenge of the sea. Adventure Under Sail aim to

provide real life experiences and an alternative form of education for young people in Plymouth, Devon and the South West, encouraging equality, inclusivity and passion through adventure and challenge.

Using Pelican as an alternative learning platform they have brought together sail training, ocean science and maritime careers. The programme is based on collaborative partnerships in the South West, bringing together young people, universities, science institutes, local authorities, Government initiatives, youth charities and third sector organisations from the maritime sector. Their transformational adventures at sea enable young people to ask questions, enquire, be curious and even critical. Combining sail training with ocean science provides these enquiring young minds with an experiential and practical environment in which to investigate, learn and apply

ocean science to positively address the climate issues that surround them daily. During May and September 2020, they will offer Ocean Science sail training voyages from Plymouth open to all young people, including those identified with higher needs. Each year, as winter sets in,

Pelican of London sails on an amazing, six-month Trans-Atlantic experientially educational voyage with its partner Ocean College. On this voyage, teachers join the ship so that they can ensure they keep up with their school curriculum while aboard. They visit incredible countries including Spain, the Azores, Morocco, Cape Verde, Bermuda, Cuba and Panama. They will complete two Atlantic

crossings and a number of land- based adventures, including a three-week sustainability project in Costa Rica. The experience and knowledge gained on these voyages is fed into their summer programme.
