Stay Safe This Winter by Checking Your Brakes
Star Tech Managing Director, Matt Peacock, warns that cold and rainy weather conditions often bring a number of issues for your cars braking system. See how you can get the most from your brakes this winter.
This year, the UK is expecting one of its coldest periods in 30 years, so it’s especially important to be aware of how you can avoid damage and wear to your brakes at a time you need them most.
When brakes overheat, they lose efficiency and the stopping distance increases. It might surprise you to hear that brakes actually become hotter on a cold and rainy day, as you are forced to apply more pressure. This extra heat and friction lengthen stopping distance and also causes damage to your brakes. You should look to check your brake pads and discs for signs of wear at least every six months, but through winter you should check your brakes monthly.
Road salts are used throughout winter to melt any ice that is on the road surface. This significantly improves your safety, but it can cause issues for your braking system.
Freshly salted roads can kick salt up around your brakes and other areas of your car, accelerating rust and corrosion. Wash or spray off your car periodically throughout the winter to remove the salt.
Ensuring that your brakes are as efficient as possible requires routine inspection and regular maintenance of the brake system. If you hear squealing, squeaking or grinding noises while driving your car this winter, you should have your brakes checked out immediately. These sounds are a typical indicator of worn-out brake pads.
We have a specialist team of technicians who offer a range of repairs – carried out to the highest of standards. Bring your car to our garage and we will check whether your cars braking system is in top condition.
