Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch

As we approach Christmas, it’s time for our regular seasonal safety messages...

Not only are we all spending more as we look to treat friends and family and enjoy a few luxuries, but we also face higher bills as the temperatures fall and the nights are longer, so it’s more important than ever that we take extra care with what we have.

When shopping online, look for the padlock sign on the address search bar and go to the genuine websites for known retailers, rather than clicking on links in emails – some of the fake accounts look very similar to original websites. When making a purchase, check if the item is coming from abroad – often the very cheap deals involve delivery times of weeks or even months.

When visiting the shops, be aware of leaving bags whilst queuing or grabbing a coffee or of leaving wallets or purses accessible. When you are among crowds of people it can be easy for someone to brush past and take items from your bags.

Check that your house insurance has an uplift on contents to cover presents left in the house, and that you have accidental damage in case of festive incidents and be sure not to leave expensive items on display at home or in your car.

Christmas can be a very diffi cult time for people living alone, popping round with a card or inviting a neighbour to join you for drinks can make a big difference to someone who is lonely. If someone you know is going to be alone, look up details of community lunches that will be taking place so they have a couple of hours of human contact.

Finally, take extra care on the roads – if you are planning to drink alcohol over the festive period please leave the car at home or decide before you go out who the nominated driver will be. Wishing all our residents a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
