Churches Together in Broadstone Churches Together in Broadstone invites you to come along to any of our services or events. Dear Friends and Neighbours

I’m writing in November and I’ve already spoken to a few people that have all their Christmas gifts sorted. It just seems incredible, almost impossible, to navigate the different needs and desires of friends and family that I might buy the best gift for each and to have done it before Advent?

Imagine now you had to buy one gift for your whole community, or even the whole world? You’d have to think way beyond John Lewis or Amazon! I imagine words like peace and unity would come into your head, things dreamed about, but always seemingly out of reach.

Through Advent and on into Christmas, we celebrate the giving of the greatest gift, the one gift that we believe will bring peace and will see a world fi nally united. That gift is Jesus; the baby in the manger, announced by angels, celebrated by Shepherds and revered by kings.

Winter Wonderland At

A Church Near You! A magical forest of Christmas Trees will be sprouting up over the weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December in Broadstone.

The first ever Christmas Tree Festival is being held at St John’s Church on Macaulay Rd, coinciding with the Broadstone Christmas Parade on 7th December. The organisers at St John’s have invited local businesses and community groups to decorate a themed Christmas Tree, which will be on display over the weekend.

Visitors will be able to buy a programme for £1 at the door, which details all the different groups with descriptions of their decorated trees. The programme also entitles the bearer on Saturday only to a free cup of tea or coffee in the Parish Hall next door, where a delicious range of cakes will also be on sale. Each Christmas tree will have a small jar next to it for people to put in a donation (suggested donation £1) to vote for

their favourite tree, and the winner will be announced at the end of the festival. All proceeds go to support the new community space being built at St John’s.

“We are really excited about this community event,” said Revd Helen Bailey, vicar of St John’s. “Who doesn’t love a Christmas Tree? It has always been a symbol of life, since pagan times, when the evergreen tree was an important symbol of hope in the dark winter season. Since the eighth century, Christians have decorated trees as a sign of everlasting light and life, with tinsel, baubles and lights all having their own meanings. Come and discover what these are at our Festival!’

Doors open 10am-5pm on Saturday 7th and 12 noon-4pm on Sunday 8th December.
