Frozen Fruits, Sodden Roots Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery It’s that most

fantastical time of year in the garden and on the nursery.

Cold weather has seen off with the tender exotics and summer annuals. Plants are wrapped in fl eece, put in sheltered positions and kept on the dry in greenhouses and conservatories. Hardy and half-hardy plants are left outside to fend

for themselves. Hanging baskets and planters are fi lled with winter bedding. As we stride through the season, we hope for temperatures cold enough to kill off pests, but not so cold as to harm plants. However, as the temperatures drop, something truly magical starts to happen to hardy fruit trees.

This cold period is critical for apple trees and is when the hormone responsible for dormancy breaks down. If an apple tree doesn’t get enough hours of cold temperatures, the fl ower buds may not open at all or they may open late in the spring. As you may expect then, a lack of cold will affect fruit production.

With soils amply soaked by winter rains, it is now a perfect time to plant bare root fruit, roses and fl owering cherries. We have a wonderful selection to choose from and can’t wait to show you our wide range at great prices. All of our plants are grafted onto dwarfi ng root stocks, meaning they produce manageable sized plants and can be container grown or planted out in smaller gardens.

We wish you all a joyous festive season, fruitful new year and look forward to sharing our love for plants with you here at Chestnut Nursery.
