t Brixham Cricket Club they pride themselves on being very family orientated. They try to keep children at the heart of everything they do with

events throughout the year and an Under 15s and Under 13s section. Member Kym Nettleton-Stokes says they also run a nationwide All Stars programme helping introduce five to eight years olds to the game. “It’s an eight week programme and attracts children from the local primary schools who may never have played cricket before. It’s only £40 and they get their own bat, ball, backpack and T-shirt with their name on.” The club has five coaches to help young people excel in the sport allowing some to move on to county standard. Kym says they also have help from abroad: “An overseas professional joins us each summer to train

members; they come from all over the world - Pakistan, India, New Zealand. They usually stay in players’ homes and embrace English life for a few months. The last chap we had was from Sri Lanka, he was only 20 and it was his first time away from home.” Kym says you don’t need loads of equipment to practise playing cricket in your back garden or at the park - just a ball and something to hit it with, you can practise your bowling by aiming at a bin! Club members work hard and play hard with a great emphasis on the social side of the game. In the club house there are skittles, darts and a pool table. They also hold events on the grounds up on Brixham’s North Boundary Road including a family fun day every year with an inflatable obstacle course, giant jenga and a water slide! The cricket season is May to September and they’re looking for more young people to join them ready for next year’s training. If you are interested go to www. brixhamcricketclub.co.uk
