South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (J. Allen. P.O. 1.Cl: H.M.S. “Boadicea”.) very fine The Naval Brigade landed from Boadicea fought at Majuba Hill on 27 February 1881.
James Allen was born at Greenwich, Kent, on 17 October 1854, and joined the Royal Navy on 17 October 1872. He was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class in December 1876, and to Petty Officer 1st Class on 2 May 1878, serving aboard H.M.S. Boadicea from that latter date until 10 April 1872. He is confirmed in Admiralty Correspondence as being present with the Naval Brigade at Majuba Hill on 27 February 1881 (ADM 1/6571 refers). Allen was commissioned Gunner R.N. on 31 January 1884, and was pensioned in April 1904. Sold with copied record of service up to 1884.
