Herbert George Jones, who was born in November 1884, was commissioned into the Army Pay Department in 1914. Subsequently Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 12 January 1918), he transferred to the newly established Royal Air Force in April 1918, was posted to H.Q. Middle East Area, Cairo, and was again Mentioned in Despatches ‘for valuable services rendered during the War in Egypt’ (London Gazette 3 June 1919).


Between the Wars, Jones held a succession of appointments as a Command Accountant, including stints of service in Iraq in the late 1920s and mid-1930s, and by the renewal of hostilities he was serving as Command Accountant at H.Q., Coastal Command, in the rank of Group Captain. For his services during the Second World War in this latter capacity he was again Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1942) and created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Birthday Honours’ List of 1942. He transferred to H.Q. Technical Training Command later that year, and was placed on the Retired List as an Air Commodore in November 1944. He died in October 1979.

Lionel Phillips was born in Bombay, India, on 25 June 1880, and was educated at the United Services College, Cheltenham. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry on 21 February 1900, and was promoted Lieutenant on 25 June 1901. He joined the Indian Army on 28 June 1905, and served with the 63rd Palamcottah Light Infantry, being advanced Captain on 21 February 1909. He served during the Great War in British, German and Portuguese East Africa, Nyasaland, and Northern Rhodesia, was promoted Major on 1 September 1915, and was appointed a Staff Captain in the East Africa Force on 29 December 1916.


Appointed acting Lieutenant Colonel on 8 September 1918, Phillips served throughout the Arab Rebellion in Mesopotamia and Iraq 1919-20, and, transferring to the 83rd Wallajahbad Light Infantry, saw further action in the Malabar campaign 1921-22. Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 24 April 1924, his final appointment was as Commandant of the 10th Battalion, 8th Punjab Regiment, from 15 June 1928 until his retirement on 24 June 1929.

Alexander Bell Duncan was born in 1885, son of Charles Duncan, Advocate in Aberdeen, Procurator Fiscal for the County. He graduated from Worcester College, Oxford, with third class honours in Literae Humaniores in 1907. Following his graduation, he entered the Indian Civil Service but early in the war he obtained a commission in the Indian Cavalry as 2nd Lieutenant, Indian Army Reserve of Officers, on 30 April 1915, and was attached to the 28th Light Cavalry on 7 May 1915. He died on 5 August 1916, of wounds received on the border with Baluchistan. He is commemorated in Tehran War Cemetery, Iran, with the inscription ‘Buried at the time in Kwash burial ground but whose grave is now lost’.
