Family Health: The Doctor Will See You Now
Recently I swapped places and became the patient. I had an operation in my local hospital in Wimborne. It is variously called a community or cottage hospital.
I have refl ected on my experience and want to sing the hospital’s praises very loudly.
As primary care doctors, we are subjected to the prevailing NHS mantras. Currently they are “primary care at scale” and “bigger is better”. Mergers, super-surgeries and digital doctors are happening at pace.
My experience began with an outpatient appointment back in May and then scans. Parking was easy and stress free. Every member of staff was friendly and welcoming. Appointments were punctual and informative.
Like many, I had never before experienced a general anaesthetic, so there was bound to be some anxiety. On the day of surgery, the staff were happy and friendly and I was quickly put at ease. Staff that are happy in their work give things a positive spin and this rubs off. It’s described as a domino effect.
We cannot underestimate the personal touch, back in the day it was called bedside manner.
Perhaps the NHS needs to scale back its aspirations and regain the bedside manner. Re- grow the happiness roots by defi ning its purpose and building relationships.
I get it now when my patients beg to go to Wimborne when a hospital visit is required. Small can be more personable, effi cient and less intimidating.
