Corfe Mullen Parish Council Update Remember, remember the 5th November...

This year is the 414th marking of the gunpowder plot and many of us will either attend an organised fi rework display or have our own celebration at home. Whilst enjoying the exciting spectacle of fi reworks it’s important to be mindful of those for whom the drawn-out celebration of 5th November is an annual nightmare, particularly for some pet owners.

I am very pleased to be able to report that: the new allotment lease has now been completed and the tenancies are now being issued; live streaming commenced for each meeting from 8th October; and Councillor surgeries have now started on a monthly basis with Cllr Lortie and myself hosting the fi rst surgery at the Library on 21st September. It was great to have met the people who came along and good to have been able to help them with their questions.

October saw the 75th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden and the ensuing battle. Operation Market Garden began on 17th September, 1944, and was the largest airborne operation in history. More than 35,000 British, American and Polish airborne troops were dropped behind enemy lines in a bid to capture the Dutch bridges that spanned the canals and rivers on the German border. Losses were huge and on 2nd October I was pleased to be able to represent Corfe Mullen at a service of commemoration and thanks at Wimborne

Minster where I laid a wreath on behalf of our community.

Every year, the Legion calls on the nation to unite in commemorating Remembrance Sunday. On Sunday 10th November, the

National Service of Remembrance will be held at the Cenotaph on

Whitehall, London. Starting at 11am, the service will honour the service and sacrifi ce of our Armed Forces community, the British and Commonwealth veterans, the Allies that fought alongside us and the civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later confl icts. Our own community will have an act of remembrance, as usual, and as a British Legion member, I look forward to standing alongside our own community on that day.

Keep safe everyone and remember, more injuries are cause by sparklers in November than other fi reworks. Did you know that three together generate the same heat as a blow torch? Be sure to handle them safely and place your spent sparklers in a bucket of water.
