Dorset Council Report
I enjoy being able to represent the residents of Corfe Mullen on Dorset Council.
An important part of my role is dealing with complaints about Dorset Council services. Many of these complaints usually focus on the state of the roads and pavements in the village as well as problems with refuse services and planning applications. However, I recently became involved in a dispute regarding the felling of trees. A resident asked me to fi nd out if a couple of mature oak trees were the subject of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). A TPO is an order made by a local planning authority in England to protect specifi c trees, groups of trees or woodlands in the interests of amenity. It prohibits the cutting down, topping, lopping or uprooting of trees without the written consent of the local planning authority. It also prohibits the wilful damage or destruction of such trees. Cutting the trees roots is also a prohibited activity and requires the authority’s consent.
I contacted the ‘Tree Team’ at Dorset Council only to be informed that, if I required information about trees with TPOs in Corfe Mullen, I had to contact another department. This was because the village had been part of the old East Dorset District Council and their
old TPO records were held by a council offi cer in Wimborne. When I eventually discussed the matter with the offi cer I was amazed to fi nd out that only a few trees in Corfe Mullen were subject to TPOs. The two oak trees in question, sadly, did not have TPOs and they were felled.
I personally fi nd this whole saga amazing as Dorset Council recently declared a ‘Climate Emergency’. Should we really be allowing people to cut down perfectly healthy mature trees? Your views would be very much appreciated.
If you wish to contact me about any matter regarding Dorset Council then please get in touch. If you wish to discuss any matter in person with me, I am available at my Councillor Surgery in Corfe Mullen Library from 10.30-11.30am (please note change of time) on the fi rst Saturday of each month.
Best regards
