Corfe Mullen Community Speedwatch Making Corfe Mullen safer
Although we are volunteers, we are authorised by and accountable to Dorset Police as one part of Dorset Road Safe. Community Speedwatch is strictly regulated. These aren’t guidelines. They are rules.
We are not allowed to take pictures of speeding vehicles. This inevitably reduces our accuracy, so we have to try harder. We can only operate in daylight hours in dry conditions on dry roads with good visibility. Our teams have to be visible in hi-vis jackets.
Our Community Speedwatch sessions have to be booked with Dorset Road Safe in advance. This makes it possible for Dorset Road Safe officers, with Trucam enforcement equipment to join our sessions on occasion. It also means that camera vans can be used more efficiently.
We choose the sites we use, many in response to residents’ complaints about speeding, but they have to be approved by the Corfe Mullen Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and then authorised by Dorset Road Safe. We currently have 13 but have applied for two more.
The reports we send to Dorset Road Safe have to be precisely formatted. We use vehicle makes, models and colours which match DVLA and Police National Computer (PNC) records. We also operate under other, non-statutory, constraints.
We run Community Speedwatch sessions on some of the same roads as the neighbouring Broadstone CSW, so we avoid planning sessions on those roads when they are already being speedwatched.
We can’t operate if there are roadworks at or near our sites, so we sometimes have to abandon planned sessions when we discover that there are roadworks.
We don’t operate on roads and at times Dorset Waste Partnership is working. There’s a schedule so that’s not a problem. Road sweeping vehicles are a problem!
