PWTAG TAKE STOCK AT ANNUAL CONFERENCE P
WTAG approaches is annual conference with a strong wind in its sails. Settled into a new
alliance with Swim England, a revitalised Poolmark scheme, and a really important conference lineup, the future looks good. The mood of optimism is reflected in the latest analysis of website figures. Overall use is up: over 2,000 unique users in July. The most popular areas are technical guidance, the code of practice and our books. But Poolmark is coming up on the
rails. This reflects a new, simplified procedure for getting your pool accredited by PWTAG. There will be announcements about this at the annual conference in Loughborough on 13 November, but newly awarded Poolmark pools include three leisure centres run by Suffolk’s Abbeycroft Leisure Trust – in Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill and Newmarket. The conference itself, held for the
first time at the University’s Holywell Conference Centre, will be building on the success of last year’s sell-out event. Here are the key elements.
• There will be an update on PWTAG’s work; the move to Swim England allows a closer partnership with swimmers, aquatic activity and attractive swimming conditions.
• Lidos – enjoying a renaissance but presenting challenges in basic water quality.
• The role of filtration in managing the risk from Cryptosporidium: the development of a risk-based management approach.
• Toxic trihalomethanes (THMs) in pool – a cause for concern? – balancing the threat.
THIS YEAR’S PWTAG
conference moves to the Holywell Park Conference Centre at Loughborough University.
• Drowning detection systems in pools: the controversy about standards.
• Validation and application of Cryptosporidium. How well are we doing in the fight against probably the greatest threat facing swimming pool operation?
• Poolmark: taking up PWTAG’s challenge is probably one of the best customer-orientated decisions an operator can take.
• Biocides and swimming pools: suppliers must comply with the regulations but it’s up to the pool operator to understand profound changes in the market place.
• Chlorine oxidisation: is it the secret to healthy, clear, sparkling water?

“Dedicated solely to raising standards in swimming pool water treatment”
There’s one thing not to be found at
the conference. Keen followers of this column will remember that PWTAG intended to launch our new pool handbook this year. This has been delayed as, after consulting with the trade, PWTAG is planning to combine its publication with pull-out summary charts which will also be sold separately.
