AFTER a hard day with the plumbing, Danny & Lorraine, landlords of the White Swan welcomed us to the upper room. As usual it was set out, all neat and clean for another
lively gathering of local and regional poets. Seventeen came, bringing new-made verses pitched on a rich variety of themes. The new radio- microphone has proved to be a

mentioned it, but the feel of John Keats' “Ode to Autumn” was defi nitely there with us in the room.
Poets tend to stay close to nature, gardeners, walkers, watchers, naturalists and observers of things minute. We were invited to dwell on the not-quite-past glories of the English Elm, of creeping and growing things, of the love and death and laughter that make up life itself. Some poets chose to work with subtle
rhymes, neatly
matching words that sang together; others were more free-raging, mindful, perhaps, that too much 'manicuring' of their lines might diminish the passion and feeling that should drive a poem forward. After refreshments and the
chatter, another seven readers took us on far journeys and expeditions, about life - here and now - under the pressures of modern living, and sometimes desperate survival. Yet the abiding memory I shall treasure is of the poet who came upon a great welded- steel Angel in the Blythburgh churchyard, and how he was somehow captivated, silenced, over-awed by the
downward stare of that Angel's timeless eyes.
Swan Poets plan to meet again on November 15th, at The White Swan, No 4 London Road, Halesworth. Admission £2 on arrival. If you have a poem to read, contact Mike on 01986 872981. Poets, readers, writers and listeners, all are always welcome.

games and typically we came back down to earth with a defeat away at Burnley. Next up are games away at Crystal Palace and home to Aston Villa before the next break for internationals. We welcomed youngsters Logan and Matthew to our Fantasy Football Auction. As usual the auction came up with some interesting teams, Chris M has Vardy and Kane up front and Charlie has again bought Benteke. First update was during our September meeting with two points separating the top three teams, last year’s winner Josh, James and Bob. Early days but Charlie is already in the chase for the wooden spoon. Our October meeting is on the 23rd when the phrase “Christmas meal” will appear once more.
