this trip: Pack more than aspirin when traveling. In fact, bring anything you have to stem a cold or flu!

The walking tour through Speyer, Ger- many, was a fairly quick one (most in our small group were sidelined and rest- ing at this point), but all were back in action by the time we reached Stras- bourg, France, which is the largest port on the Upper Rhine. The well-preserved Old Town, with its remarkable Renais- sance and Gothic architecture and its stunningly-restored Cathedral, brought hours of invigoration - and shopping!

We think small meetings are a big deal.

Finally, we arrived at Basel, where France, Germany and Switzerland all converge. But, instead of taking the tour through this amalgamation of Old-World culture and 21st-century modernity, we opted to take a trip up to the scenic Alps via a tour bus, and then on board a cogwheel train.

In truth, the tour was a bit of a letdown, only because it had been so foggy to start, and also - since the alpine chalet in which we were provided lunch was simply a noisy ski lodge with foods that aren’t worth reporting on (like the waxy fondue). But that bit of disappointment was quickly nullified upon reaching the stupendously-scenic lake town of Brienz, which is surrounded by soaring peaks and waterfalls. Out of any locales we’d been to, this one was probably the most stunning to behold.

We rued having to return to the bus, as we could have walked the village all day and into the next one. While Don and Louise toured Basel and were then shuttled to Zurich, we went directly from Brienz and met them at our final destination – two nights at the Sheraton in that famed city in Switzer- land.

Dana and I have been to Geneva before, but never to Zurich, and we cannot rec- ommend it enough. Clean and friendly, with outgoing locals (it’s Zurich – not
