“A powerful release, combining jazz, gospel, and soul. —The Pitch

Damien Sneed’s

Inspired by the words and actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Damien Sneed’s We Shall Overcome showcases a repertoire of African-American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists. This production ties together a living lineage of music and culture that includes traditional and modern gospel, classical, jazz, Broadway, and spirituals, all interwoven with excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches. From Aretha Franklin to Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone to Donny Hathaway, and traditional spirituals and music from The Wiz, Sneed’s unique history with each genre lets him cover so much musical ground fluidly in a single performance.

We Shall Overcome A Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

Presented in association with the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity, and Multicultural Affairs through the UVM President’s Initiative for Diversity.
