SECTOR FOCUS: SKILLS

City College Plymouth meets the skills crisis

STEM businesses are warning of a growing skills shortage as they struggle to recruit qualified workers in science, technology, engineering and mathematical fields. This shortage is costing UK businesses £1.5bn a year in recruitment, temporary staffing, inflated salaries and additional training costs. Employers in the South West are

fishing for skills from a small labour pool. The difficulties they face can be seen in the large number of hard- to-fill and skills-shortage vacancies that exist in our region, significantly more than UK averages. Alongside these recruitment difficulties, 10,000 (or 14.5% of) employers in the South West identified 40,000 existing staff as having skills gaps, i.e. lacking the skills required to perform their current job. City College Plymouth is working

with Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, employer groups and individual businesses throughout the City to meet their needs through a range of specialist training:

South West Institute Of Technology (SWIOT)

City College is celebrating its part in a multi-million pound bid success for a new Institute of Technology for the South West. As part of a unique collaboration, including Babcock and Plymouth University, the College will invest £2m in specialist facilities and higher-level technical training to expand their Engineering and Digital programmes, including the development of a new degree suite to deliver Marine Autonomy. Fiona Horrell, Head of Strategic Partnerships at City College

Plymouth is a member of the SWIoT Project Leadership Team and will deliver this new development, launching in autumn 2019.

CITB immersive learning City College is one of seven projects chosen from across the country to develop new start-of- the-art training experiences for the Construction industry. Working closely with Kier Living and digital specialists, the Moment, they are developing immersive learning experiences within a high-tech Virtual Reality (VR) house – based on a Kier Living 4 bed construction, as seen around the Plymouth area. The house will be used to

demonstrate real-life examples to aid health and safety practice in a secure and safe environment, adding a key immersive element to the classroom- taught curriculum currently taught at City College Plymouth. The project is also going ‘on the

road’, as students and potential new recruits to the Construction industry try out VR challenges at roadshows, apprenticeship fairs and College Open Days. For further information, contact Lance Chatfield on 01752 305300.

City College Plymouth College students in the STEM centre

Specialist training for businesses Using ESF project funding, the college is delivering specialist STEM and management training to boost local skills and address niche gaps in knowledge. Hidden Talent in Devon has been

delivering a ten-week Digital Content Creation Course to a group of ten. The college have also been delivering a ten-week Leadership and Management level 5 unit to a group of 14 professionals looking to boost their business skills. Their Strategic Employer Engagement in Devon (SEED) programme is currently working with employers to develop training in the areas of cyber security, Onefile management, eLearning and simple website management. For further information, contact Rachel McGowan on 01752 305300.

Centre of excellence for maths City College Plymouth is one of 21 government funded Centres for Excellence in Maths in the Country. The idea is to make maths education relevant and accessible to all - providing the students with the skills they need to excel in further education, employment and life. If you want to improve your

maths or want to help in any way, get in contact with Katie Fremlin on 01752 305300.

International stem excellence Students at City College Plymouth have wide-ranging opportunities to extend their STEM learning and experience in funded work placements through the College’s Erasmus+ programme. So far this year, Digital, Business and Engineering students have taken up placements in Finland, the Netherlands, Germany and Lithuania. The college also recruits students

internationally to boost skills in the South West. With new specialist international programmes planned in Engineering and International Expert/Import, they are keen to hear from local organisations interested in expanding their business in these areas.
