Herring, being rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, is very good for you. Furthermore, being a fish that is generally abundant, eating it is better for the environment than bigger, commercially popular and less sustainable beasties (like tuna). So, if the idea of a cheeky herring-based holiday appeals, how about a quick jaunt to Dieppe this autumn? There are herring festivals all over the north at this time of year (apparently the tradition dates to the Hundred Years War, when a consignment of the fish had to be sold off sharpish at Lieurey

because English ships were preventing it from moving on to its destination). At Dieppe, a phalanx of goggle-clad fishermen grill up a storm on the quai Henri IV – and, if you get here a week early, there’s another herring feast at Le Tréport on the 10th!

Foire de la Châtaigne October 19-20, 2019
As the amber burnish of autumn sets in, it’s time for the chestnut festival in Mourjou. This Auvergne village preserves its heritage with the annual Foire de la Châtaigne, where two tonnes of chestnutty delights – breads, pastries, desserts, honey, preserves and pickles – are accompanied by 5,000 litres of cider made fresh from local apples.
