FESTIVALS 2019/20 THE GUIDE

proudly presents the latest vintage with plenty of tastings and merrymaking. It’s not all about the local tipple of choice, though. The seven bars of the Fête du Cognac also serve Charentais wines and pineau, the regional (and admittedly cognac-based) apéritif, to be appreciated on its own or in any number of the crafted cocktails on offer. There will also be oysters and mussels from the Charentaise coast to scoff, as well as in-season melons, the best local meats and cheeses and, of course, cagouilles – the local term for petits gris snails. And after you’ve dined you can get up to dance the calories away at any of the two or three concerts held every evening of the festival, featuring musical genres and styles to suit all tastes… and states of sobriety. www.lafeteducognac.fr

Fête du Piment à Espelette October 26-27, 2019

Spice things up in the Basque

most famous local ingredient. There’s also plenty of time to enjoy the traditional parades, music concerts and games of pelote basque. This year, the Saturday will be devoted to a market selling peppers, with entertainment from Basque dance group Ezpela and a concert by men’s choir Ezpeletan Kantuz. Also, don’t miss the Solemn Mass with the Choir of Espelette on Sunday morning. www.espelette-paysbasque.com

The smoky peppers of Espelette are recognised as an AOC product

Country this autumn at the Espelette Pepper Festival. The production of the local piment will always be to the fore – especially when the time comes for the Brotherhood of the

Espelette Pepper to solemnly induct new members to its fabled society – and you will have plenty of opportunities over the weekend to thrill your palate with local dishes including this

Corsican wine is an interesting proposition. The island is, of course, politically part of France, but its winemaking traditions and the grape varietals planted here betray the deep Italian infl uence on the culture. Whites, reds, rosés and muscats are all produced, often by small wineries in the far north of the island, the Cap Corse, and the wine they make is gaining a reputation far beyond these
