Festival International des Jardins Until November 3, 2019 A visit to the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire in the département of Loir-et-Cher should be on the annual calendar of any gardener. Its 10-hectare Prés du Goualoup park, created in 2012, hosts the permanent collection, but professionals and keen amateurs alike return each year to discover new ideas and inspiration at the annual International Garden Festival. Since 1992, Chaumont has steadily developed a reputation for excellence in planting and design. Running from April, when the larger spring bulbs will be coming into full bloom, right through until November, when the frosts will be knocking back the last dahlias, this year’s theme, ‘Gardens of Paradise’, will seek to create the sense of an eternal place of happiness and equilibrium with plants and materials – a space of dreams and of forgetting reality. The curators have recognised that the very word ‘paradise’ comes to us from the Persian word for ‘garden’, and so in a sense this is a return to a much older time in our civilisation, when the natural and the artifi cial were less divided.

Fête du Mimosa February 1-28, 2020
The mimosa, in climes warmer than those of the UK, fl owers from mid-January to early March
– just in time for March 8, International Women’s Day, which is partly why the fl ower has become a symbol for that most special celebration. On the Côte d’Azur, where this native Australian plant thrives, entire hillsides can be covered in its yellow blooms, and at Mandelieu- la-Napoule (the French capital of the mimosa) the entire month of February is devoted to the fl ower – though the majority of the celebrations occur over a period of eight days. Attend the election of the Queen of Mimosa; follow the night parade from the Capitou district to the city centre; take the bus tour of the route of the fl ower from branch to perfume bottle; and send bouquets home to friends and family for them to enjoy before the mimosas in their own gardens fi nally make their belated appearance.

Nuits des Mille Feux July 5-6 & August 2-3, 2019 Villandry, in the Indre-et-Loire département, is a spectacular château famed for its gardens. With their perfectly-manicured box hedging popping with colour, these sublime grounds are illuminated every year for the ‘Nights of a Thousand Lights’, a candlelit spectacle that casts a soft glow upon Villandry’s gardens and paths over two evenings. After a mesmerising walk through les jardins, visitors are treated to a fi rework display.
