always be associated with the city of Orléans, where she saved France from the English in the Hundred Years War. While the good folk of Normandy were busy selling herring on the cheap under the baleful watch of English ships in La Manche (see Foire aux Harengs), the inhabitants of Orléans had bigger fish to fry. The city was besieged – and the only fish they had seen for several months were the surrounding hoards of ‘fish and chips’ over the parapets. Desperate for inspiration, the Dauphin Charles commissioned 17-year-old Joan of Arc to ride with an army and lift the siege. The capture of the Fort des Tourelles on May 7, 1429, in which Joan was wounded by an arrow yet bravely fought on to the final victory, marked the turning point. The following day, the English left the city. Ever since, Orléans has remained faithful to its heroine, whom they celebrate every year at the unique Fêtes de Jeanne d’Arc.

Les Médiévales de Provins June 15-16, 2019
After the success of the 2018 edition’s ‘Humans and Beasts’ theme, the 36th Provins Medieval Festival continues with ‘Celebrations and Festivities’. This year, the party starts on the Friday night with a free medieval music concert by Luc Arbogast on the place Saint- Ayoul. The festival is officially inaugurated on the Saturday morning at the place du Châtel, and thereafter begins the merriment of minstrels, entertainers, craftsmen, games, jousts, legends and street theatre. The Bal Médiéval is on the Saturday night and the festivities conclude on the Sunday evening with the Grand Concert de Musique Médiévale.
