THE FIRST WORD

Welcome to the May edition of Business Network. In an uncertain, volatile and arguably – in modern times – unprecedented political and

business climate, it has perhaps never been more important for businesses to have a voice in order to have their concerns, experiences and views heard. And that doesn’t just means big multinationals – it means businesses of all sizes in all

sectors. While Brexit has focused on the future of UK plc, it’s just as important for business

communities across the nation to come together with a clear, united and unequivocal voice. Only by doing so can we ensure that the business community has a say on key decisions that will affect us all in the months, years and decades to come. Here in the East Midlands, we have a responsibility to champion our great region – one

renowned for its skills, expertise and robustness. Businesses are the creators of wealth and by creating this wealth, we can enrich and improve the places and communities we live and serve both now and well into the future. Giving our members a voice and campaigning on behalf of our region – backed by the key

asks and concerns our members tell us both on the ground and through our Quarterly Economic Surveys – help us, as a Chamber, to do this. The theme of May’s Business Network is ‘Helping You Influence’ and majors on the importance of giving you, the region’s businesses, the platform to reach the people and organisations that matter – locally, regionally and nationally. This edition includes an interview with the Chamber’s Chief Executive Scott Knowles about

how we do just that. There is also an extremely interesting and thought-provoking focus feature from Geldards Chairman David Williams about why and, crucially, how we – as a business community in the East Midlands – must use our collective voice to secure a prosperous, successful future. Business Network is a dedicated publication for you, our members. If you have a story, or

an idea, that you believe would be suitable for Business Network, please email magazine@emc-dnl.co.uk or call me on 0333 320 0333 ext. 2089.

Best wishes, Nathan Fearn Editor, Business Network
