d79 EVENT PREVIEW / CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK 2019

was clear to me from the beginning that for the event to grow, it had to do so in a concentrated way, not expanding to swallow up other areas, but by maintaining its sense of place,” says Newton. “It would be tempting to try and grow it geographically, but as soon as you do that, you lose the atmosphere and the proximity of all the content. We also only ever add a new venue when existing ones are full – it has been careful and measured growth over the years.”

AN EVOLVING MIX

The tight layout of the event has continued as new venues have been added. It now incorporates seven separate venues – from Fabric in the south to Design Fields to the north – but each are in such close proximity to the showrooms that wherever you are visiting, you are always within site of the next location. Visitors are further assisted by the bright pink signposting to help guide them to the next destination.

From 30 exhibitors in the first year – almost all furniture brands – to around 100 this year, the mix of companies involved has also broadened, with surfaces, tiles, fabric, lighting and kitchens & bathrooms all now well- represented within the show, reflecting the ever-evolving mix of design-related businesses that Clerkenwell hosts.

Newton says that central to the growth of the Clerkenwell area is that it has happened organically. This is no purpose-built design super-structure. “If CDW hadn’t launched 10 years ago, the area would probably not have the concentration of brands that it has now. Over the years, I feel we have helped to fuel its development by acting as a real showcase for what the area has to offer.”

“We’ve spent 10 years trying to create the perfect exhibition,” he says. “We

stated off with the Farmiloe building and have worked with various venues in the area since, but it has sometimes been difficult to set things up in such a way that all exhibitors and showrooms benefit from the visitor traffic. Last year, we got it 90% right, but this year, it feels 100% right. It’s taken that long, but right from the yellow line that starts at Farringdon station, visitors can go on a journey supported by our street signs, app or printed guide without the fear of missing anything.”
