mong a plethora of new products from Duravit launching at ISH in Frankfurt recently was Viu, a full bathroom series distinguished by
avant-garde forms and precise shapes. It is the latest result of an enduring collaboration with German studio Sieger Design stretching back some 30 years.
Combining Viu with accompanying furniture line XViu opens up a host of possible applications, thanks to its modular design. The finishes in ceramic, glass or wood contrast with aluminium side profiles, while mirrors and mirror cabinets also carry the same style.
“Viu’s distinctive formal aesthetic is especially evident in the c-bonded washstand, which is the centrepiece of the series,” says Michael Sieger – pitched as the 'creative one' of the prolific duo, alongside his brother Christian who oversees the managerial side of the studio.

Another key style element is the solitary bathtub from the XViu collection. The organic and ergonomic form of the tub is encased within a precise rectangular metal frame to reinterpret the classic freestanding bathtub, giving it a furniture-like character.
Michael Sieger adds: “It’s the first step into a whole new look for sanitaryware, achieved with the combination between the ceramic and the ‘c-bonded’ edge developed by Duravit. Because of this, we can use the basin as a very precise edge in a way that is not otherwise possible, and at the same time, still have the fantastic ceramic surface which is the best you can have for a washbasin in terms of durability and functionality.”
The design is characterised by the flowing shape of the basin combined with the precision of the c-bonded edging. Aluminium legs and shelving further differentiate. “It was very important for Duravit that the washbasin could be used as a single item mounted on the
wall as well as within the furniture,” explains Michael Sieger, “and this design allows it to work in this way.”
The range is also defined by detail. Sometimes from a position of relaxing in the bathtub, the user may have a perspective of the underside of the washbasin, so the basin features an acrylic cover to hide the fittings and maintain the clean aesthetic.
The collection is scalable to make it suitable for bathrooms of various sizes. “We have to be realistic,” says Christian Sieger. “Spaces are becoming smaller, and in cities in particular, people may not have a large bathroom but still want the quality and a specific design.”
Viu’s creation has been a long time in the making, with initial ideas being presented by Sieger four years ago before the project built up full speed two years on. Its European premiere at ISH will be followed this month by the UK launch at Duravit’s London showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week.
