t must be hard for more recent visitors to imagine, but 20 years ago, the London district of Clerkenwell was a very different place to the thriving mix of homes and businesses that it is today. In fact, it had a rather run-down feel, a somewhat neglected gap between the bright lights of the West End and the gleaming offices and high finance of the City.

In the intervening period, a number of factors have seen the fortunes of the area totally transformed. Initially, there was a regeneration boom from old industrial buildings being repurposed as high-end loft apartments. At the same time, architects and other creative industries – who did have a long- term presence in the area to some extent – increased in number, partly due to a combination of cheaper rents compared with other areas of central London plus close proximity to some of the capital’s development hotspots.
Now of course, Clerkenwell is very much the place to be, with a huge range of design-led showrooms dotted throughout this diverse but compact area. Once a year, the streets and their showrooms play host to a celebration of design in this vibrant quarter and this year’s edition of Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) promises to be extra special as it marks the 10th anniversary of the steadily growing show.
Giant customised candle-like beacons will be found throughout the area, while showrooms, practices and seven exhibition venues throw open their doors as part of this annual design week. CDW has established itself as the UK’s leading independent design festival, which each year attracts the international design community to the district.
DESIGN'S BIG-HITTERS CDW’s growth has flourished over the past 10 years, working in synergy with the natural growth of Clerkenwell as an area full of creativity. Last year the event welcomed 34,060 attendees and over 300 exhibiting brands, from major industry names such as Cappellini, Kvadrat and Moroso to
newer emerging talents. This year will see the biggest and best programme yet with installations celebrating the unique history of Clerkenwell, hundreds of design-led fringe events, pop-ups, workshops, talks and showroom presentations. Activities will run over three days and follow a distinct trail from north to south from Design Fields down to Light held in Fabric nightclub. From new designs by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Established & Sons to Fritz Hansen’s exhibition in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Architects and an outdoor cooking space serving food by Kitchen Architecture, the event will be reflecting the diversity of the design businesses it serves to promote.
