d25 BATHROOMS / ISH 2019
The Conca basin collection takes inspiration from the original 1972 design by Paolo Tilche – a range that signalled a shift from pure practicality to a combination of form and function in the bathroom
The initial work with Ludovica + Roberto Palomba comprises a range of ceramics and fittings, as well as furniture and a bath tub, and – in keeping with some of the broader trends on show throughout this edition of ISH – sees a return to the use of colour to enhance modern interiors projects.
An example of reinterpreting a classic for the modern era is the Conca basin collection, which takes inspiration from the original, designed in 1972 by Paolo Tilche – a range that signalled a shift from pure practicality to a combination of form and function in the bathroom. Palomba Serafini Associati has taken the traditional rounded basin and revamped it with a minimalistic square design to align with contemporary trends, while retaining its distinctive character.
Also adding variety to Ideal Standard’s offering is the new Extra basin, a simple square design with sharp
edges, suitable for bathroom projects that call for a pure geometric shape. Both this and Conca allow for flexible installation, suitable for being wall- hung or integrated on a worktop.
Palomba Serafini Associati has also added to Ideal Standard’s toilet and bidet portfolio with the creation of Blend Curve, which complements the designs of Conca and Extra. An inclusive toilet range with a neutral, round design, Blend Curve is available in wall-hung and back-to-wall options for both toilets and bidets.
Designer Kitchen & Bathroom has got to know Roberto Palomba well over the years. As well as speaking with him on numerous occasions about the steady flow of innovative new bathroom products that have punctuated his prolific career, he was also the worthy recipient of the Lifetime Achievement honour at the Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards in 2015.
But his genuine excitement at his new partnership with Ideal Standard is very clear to see when we meet him at ISH 2019. “The incredible thing is that people have really trusted me,” he says. “Torsten [Türling, Ideal Standard CEO] has really supported me throughout this process.”
“When I started working with Ideal Standard, I took some time to study the history and I think it’s really important to develop what they’ve been doing for the benefit of future generations. It’s a brand that is serious about design, and in particular, designing for Ideal Standard gives you the opportunity to design for the people. It’s not just about showing off your competence as a designer, or for the manufacturer to demonstrate how clever they are, it is more about creating products that go deep into society to reach ordinary households. That’s the unique reach that the brand has.”
