24 April 2019 Halesworth & Southwold Community News News from Halesworth

Community Church TWO more courses in the ‘Understanding Yourself’ series have taken place this month. The first was a Step Four. This was a particularly positive group because, despite travelling

in from various

parts of the country, most of them have been together on the courses since their first Step One. Two quotes from the feedback will give you the flavour of that weekend. ‘This is a wonderful understanding of what God has for the full depth and breadth of our lives - and encouragement

and support

to live it in freedom.' ‘Life changing, eye opening and so many times of reassurance!' We also ran a Step Two weekend at the end of March. We take a break from the courses for a while now until the autumn but the links with those who attended continue

as we support many across this country on their journey of discovering the resources that are available by walking with God through the challenges of life. For anyone interested, we will be running a Step One in the early part of next year. With the spring flowers and hedgerows coming into their glory our thoughts turn towards Easter. There is always a new beginning, however dark or difficult the days might be. Even death itself has lost its power for those who trust in the Risen Christ. You are welcome to join us for our Easter Sunday service (April 21st) at 10am.

Halesworth Men's Shed April Update

HELLO readers, we have had a busy month of progress with the ongoing work to improve the facilities, layout and equipment upgrade, this work will continue into April and deliver a much better working environment for our members. As part of the reorganisation,

we have identified a number of items deemed surplus to requirements that will be repurposed via

A Mission (TWAM).

Tools With Also,

the machinery that we have replaced with new and more robust equipment has gone to a new home where it will be very useful. We are completing a couple of sizeable projects in progress one is supporting a local conservation initiative and the

other the airfield museum. Don't forget that we are still running the basic woodworking course on a Thursday afternoon and soon hope to start enamelling workshops when we have the new layout in place, phone or email for details.

Production of items for the upcoming Country Fair season is ramping up in earnest. We enjoyed a talk about hedgehogs given by one of our local benefactors who already has a hedgehog box and cafe from our willing workers. Meanwhile, our Chairman

is making significant efforts applying to local funding opportunities to help us cover our ambitious upgrading plans. All in all, a very busy Spring, the results of which we are sure

Norwich City Supporters

CITY have had a number of players from the first team squad away on international duty, hopefully they have now all returned unscathed. It looks like two from three for automatic promotion to the Premier League. At the time of writing, there are eight games to go before the end of the season, City still sit in first place, four points ahead of Sheffield Utd with Leeds Utd a further point behind. With twenty four points available anything can happen, City have perhaps the easier run in, though the last game away at Aston Villa looks a little dangerous. We have two teams in the Christmas Lights

Quiz at

Chinney’s on Friday 12th April, always an enjoyable evening for a very good cause, 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Our Fantasy Football League competition appears to be cut and dried with Josh 100 points in the lead and Dave 86 points adrift at the foot of the table, Charlie is still in mid table, unheard of in recent seasons! Next update at our April meeting on the 17th.

CC Holton and Blyford Village Hall

ITS Spring Craft Fair time at the Hall - Saturday 6th April – will see a collection of very different stalls selling everything from superb photographic prints via food, to gifts for all those birthdays and special occasions. Do come along and wander amongst the colourful array on offer and then there’s hot bacon rolls and tasty soups to savour at lunch time.

April will see our normal fun

offerings of Bingo on 11th and 25th starting at 7.30pm. Cash prizes of over £250 per session on a regular basis and lots of fun and laughs – why not give it a try?

Big Breakfast starts at 9am on

Sunday 7th April – give yourself a break and let somebody else cook a traditional breakfast, which includes loads of toast and great marmalade made for us by Jill and John Hewlett – our grateful thanks as ever.

The Pop up pub opens its

doors on Friday 26th at 7.30pm. It’s a great social get together in Holton, lots of chat and banter and information(!) gets passed on.

Our future programme features The Classic Car Day on Sunday 16th June. Our really big event with lots of Classic and Vintage vehicles to admire and a chance to chat to the owners. In the Hall there will be an Art installation, All Day Music, the bar will be open from noon and the kitchen will amaze you with its offers of meals, cakes, teas and coffees. We have invested in our own barbecue and it will be in full

strength with burgers and sausage rolls etc. There’s also our favourite ice cream man in his van and our willing volunteers are

running a tombola stall.

Anyone wishing to donate some items for the tombola please just give Wendy a ring on 01986 872590. It’s that number to book a stall too, pitches are available inside and out.

June is our very busy month with the Open Gardens following on 29th and 30th. If you grow perhaps too many plants for this season we would be really

grateful to have them for the Plant Stall at the Hall over the weekend – everything we make helps to keep the Hall open and available for all to use, visit and hire.

At our AGM in July we will be looking for enthusiastic members of the community to join our committee who want to see the improvements to the Hall continue and are willing to pitch in and be part of a “Team” determined to deliver. Could that be you?

Following our successful Burns Night on September 7th we will be running our first Autumn supper another chance to have a great night with friends with super food! Booking will be essential so ring Wendy for tickets.

Halesworth Volunteer Centre

IT has been a busy first quarter of the year. We have been delighted to support Rumburgh’s excellent Sociable Soups lunch club. They are now off on their holidays until September but Sociable Soups has brought many people together and it has been a pleasure to support Josie and her team. It is also great to be working with the Pear Tree Centre and so exciting to see the building work beginning next to the Surgery. We will be holding our Easter Bake Sale on Tuesday 16th April at Cutler’s Hill Surgery.

Look

out for lovely cakes, delicious sausage rolls and savouries and gluten free goodies.

All cakes

are prepared by our volunteers – a big thank you in advance to all our bakers and buyers. Carers’ Day. 25th April at the

Cut. We round off April with another joint venture with our friends at Halesworth Dementia Carer’s Fund. They have been working very hard with the help of our Volunteer Support Officer, Karen Kerridge to create a truly exciting looking programme of workshops and events for carers all taking place in the lovely atmosphere of the Cut. Taster sessions including a session on Power of Attorney and wills, Dementia Friends, Advance Care Planning and fun sessions with singing, dancing and drumming.

Lots

of organisations will be there, offering lots of help, support and information. Oh, and there is free tea and cake as well! Don’t forget, the HVC team are here to help so if you know of someone who would benefit from our Isolation Buster programme or need a Community Car to get them from A to B, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01986 874290.

Thanks to the very generous support of Halesworth Town Council, we will be launching a recruitment drive

for new

volunteers in May. So watch this space or give us a call on 01986 875600 if you are interested in volunteering.
