Places to visit Rye Heritage Centre


Quayside


Home to the famous Rye Town Model. Book ghost walks and guided tours and find information on the town’s atractions. Tel: 01797 226696


Rye Castle Museum East Street and Ypres Tower


Te Museum is open weekends and bank holidays, while the tower is open seven days a week (subject to weather conditions). Small entry fees for both. Tel: 01797 226728


Scot free


Romney Marsh, to the east of Rye, remained susceptible to flooding until the 13th century when a tax, called a “scot”, was enforced to fund flood protection. The phrase “getting off scot free” was something enjoyed by those living on higher ground, who were exempt.


St Mary’s Church Church Square


Dating back to the early 12th century, its unusual clock strikes only on the quarter hours. Bird’s-eye views of town from the tower. Tickets on sale at the tower base.


St Thomas’s Church nearby Winchelsea, Rye


Terence Alan Milligan (comedian and writer Spike Milligan) is buried here. Te infamous inscription : “I told you I was ill” … appears to be an urban myth.


Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Harbour Road


A coastal reserve with hides and habitats including saltmarsh, shingle, saline lagoons, grazing marsh and reedbeds. Tel: 07884 494982


Lamb House West Street, Rye


Te former home of novelists EF Benson and Henry James. Lamb House is tucked away along a cobbled street, with a fantastic walled garden. National Trust suggest one to two hours to explore. Closed Wednesday and Tursday. Tel: 01580 762334


Canter sands!


Horse riding on the beach at nearby Camber Sands is restricted for the summer to October 2 (inclusive). Riding is permited weekdays early morning (off beach by 8.30am) and evenings (aſter 7pm). Riding is permited around LOW tide hours only.


Antiques Roadshow


Tirty minutes away in Batle, Fiona Bruce and the team from Antiques Roadshow will be filming at Batle Abbey on Tuesday, July 9.
