OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION WINNERS

10 Years of Recognising Excellence

Prof. Harry McQuillan, Community Pharmacy Scotland, George Romanes, Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy recipient and Bernard Stottelaar, EMIS Health

This year marks the 40th anniversary of George Romanes joining the pharmacist register and now this popular Borders pharmacist has a second reason to celebrate after being awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy Practice accolade!

George picked up the award after impressing the judges with his ‘ability to look head’, his desire to ‘push the boundaries of practice’ and the fact that he has been ‘an early adopter of innovation – both in terms of service development and technology’.

In his citation, Professor Harry McQuillan gave those present a brief resume of George’s CV, pointing out that, after completing his pre-registration year with Boots in Berwick- upon-Tweed, he moved to Edinburgh before returning to his native Borders to establish his own pharmacy practice.

During this time, George integrated himself into the multidisciplinary primary care team and was one of the first pharmacy contractors to actively

engage with GP colleagues. He also became active in the world of pharmacy politics and representation, joining the Area Pharmaceutical Committee and Borders Pharmacy Contractors Committee.

In 1998, George was elected as one of the youngest-ever Chairs of the then Scottish Pharmaceutical General Council and served his term of office until 2001.

George’s contribution to innovative practice and his level of personal development, Prof McQuillan said, had led to George being held in high esteem throughout the profession, with his views widely respected and sought after.

Well done George!

‘I’m really pleased to be chosen for this award tonight, it’s fantastic. It’s also great to be the tenth recipient of it and it’s great for community pharmacy in general.’ George Romanes, Romanes Pharmacy

‘Events like tonight are really important. You have people like George being recognised, and you have young, up and coming pharmacists seeing the heights that those who have won this award over the years have reached. It’s so important to drive that motivation through the industry – they are the future of Pharmacy. EMIS are honoured to be able to present this award to people like George, which in turn inspires and motivates the future stars of Pharmacy.’ Bernard Stottelaar, EMIS Health

‘It’s George’s dedication to his community, to his patients and to his staff that have been behind this award.

He really is at the forefront of the profession and is still pushing forward, so he was an obvious winner tonight.’ Professor Harry McQuillan, Community Pharmacy Scotland
