AS WITH MANY OTHER PROFESSIONS AND INDUSTRIES, PHARMACY IS FACING A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY AT THE MOMENT. NEVERTHELESS, ALL EYES WERE FOCUSSED ON THE MANY POSITIVES IN SCOTTISH PHARMACY AS MORE THAN 400 HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS RECENTLY GATHERED TO CELEBRATE THE 2019 SCOTTISH PHARMACIST AWARDS!

OH WHAT A NIGHT!

THIS WAS THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INDUSTRY ACCOLADES AND THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE (EICC) PROVIDED THE PERFECT BACKDROP FOR ALL THAT PHARMACY HAS CONTRIBUTED IN WHAT HAS BEEN ANOTHER BUSY AND EXCITING – ALBEIT CHALLENGING - YEAR.

The host for this year’s event was the highly popular TV personality, Carol Smillie, who opened the proceedings by reminding those gathered – including Alex MacKinnon, Director of Royal

Pharmaceutical Society Scotland; Leyla Hannbeck, Chief Pharmacist and Director of Pharmacy, Professor Harry McQuillan, Chief Executive Officer of Community Pharmacy Scotland and Professor

Donald Cairns from Robert Gordon University - of what community and hospital pharmacy have achieved over the last decade.

‘Today,’ Carol said, ‘Scottish pharmacy is held up as a model for community pharmacy around the world – superb recognition of all the strenuous efforts that have been put into the profession over the years.

‘More and more pharmacists are becoming independent prescribers, and are offering easily-accessible treatment to patients in their local

communities through pharmacy- based clinics, while the Minor Ailment Service, which was so successfully piloted in Inverclyde, is currently being considered for rolling out across Scotland, enabling pharmacists to treat common clinical conditions.

‘Scottish pharmacy’s global reputation goes without saying,’ she concluded, ‘and tonight you will see just a few of the reasons why it is held in such regard both within and outwith of Scotland.’
