WINNERS HEALTH PROMOTION

Neil Phillips from Eclipse Generics with the team from Cadham Pharmacy Health Centre CADHAM PHARMACY HEALTH CENTRE, GLENROTHES

Glenrothes is an ex mining town, and so there is a high prevalence of respiratory disease amongst patients living in the area. This has naturally created high levels of pressure and demand on the respiratory services offered in the primary care setting and this has led to difficulty in patients obtaining annual respiratory reviews and being able to access GP/nurse appointments when experiencing acute exacerbations. Contractor Bernadette Brown and her team at Cadham Pharmacy Health Centre were concerned at the fact that too many people were still dying from asthma, and so, since she and her team see patients with asthma on a regular basis – especially when they need their short-acting beta agonist inhalers – she decided to do more to educate them and show them how they could take control of their asthma. As a result, Bernadette and her team invested heavily in resources to allow them to establish accessible

respiratory clinics with highly-skilled pharmacists and independent prescribing nurses in the community pharmacy setting. These clinics both improve patients’ healthcare outcomes and relieve the burden on the primary care setting. Since June 2018, the pharmacy is also part of the Fife Asthma Pilot, which concentrates on inhaler technique, peak flow and ACT scores, giving patients the tools and confidence to control their asthma. Major improvements are already being recorded.

‘This is a team award and I know it doesn’t say team on the title, but all of our members of staff are involved in saving lives. Three people every day die of asthma and two thirds of them could be avoided. Our whole team engaged with this project, and the idea that we can do it from community pharmacy is such a privilege and honour.’ Bernadette Brown, Cadham Pharmacy Health Centre, Glenrothes

‘The Health Promotion category is vitally important and it is our job to get the right drugs in the right place at the right times so that these people can dispense and carry on their great work.’ Neil Phillips, Eclipse Generics
