Recognising the value in providing a wide range of services to meet the health needs of their local patients Michelle Strachan, the pharmacist manager at Rowlands Pharmacy in Mintlaw successfully established a seasonal influenza vaccination service back in 2011, and this has grown year on year. Michelle discovered through offering this service - and by speaking to her patients - that there was a local need for improving access to other vaccinations for travel. Following consultation with her team, she took the decision that a full travel service would be a welcome addition to their current service portfolio. Not only would it be convenient and improve access for both their business travellers and holiday makers, it would also support the local surgery by managing a service that would then let them concentrate on caring for their patients with more pressing needs. Moreover, it supported her desire to offer holistic advice for each individual traveller
and tailor the advice and offering accordingly. The team recognised that they would need support, training and development to get this service launched, and so Michelle got in touch with the Rowlands Learning and Development team, who gave her support materials for herself and the team to consider what training they would require. Michelle also utilised a GSK Pharmacy online training programme, which covered all aspects of running a travel health clinic and gave in-depth information for each of the vaccines on offer and the diseases they aimed to prevent.
