WINNERS PHARMACIST OF THE YEAR

Maree Ferguson, Cadham Pharmacy Health Centre, with Russell Leith, Teva UK Limited

MAREE FERGUSON, CADHAM PHARMACY HEALTH CENTRE, GLENROTHES

Maree is an inspirational young pharmacist who, at the age of 27, is a shining light for what the future of pharmacy. Maree achieved a Masters with distinction from Robert Gordon University in 2012 and is passionate about using her clinical skills in the community pharmacy setting. She went on to achieve a Clinical Diploma in Pharmacy Practice with Distinction and became an Independent Prescriber in 2018. After joining Cadham Pharmacy, Maree set about training and was mentored by a local GP, Dr Da Soyz from Leslie Medical Practice. Over the next 18 months, she shadowed her mentor, local nurses, out of hours nurses and GPs and Cadham Pharmacy’s own in- house nurse Margaret and pharmacy owner, Bernadette Brown. Maree’s objectives were primarily to evidence and improve the quality of life outcomes from her pharmaceutical care in acute common ailments and in supporting

people managing their asthma, and to complete her clinical diploma and independent prescribing qualifications. She also hoped to provide evidence that her contribution would lead to the public changing their behaviour and choosing Pharmacy First for acute illness. Maree was involved in every step of setting up the pharmacy’s triage clinic and in changing the pharmacy environment to reflect the clinical role required for providing exceptional care at a time when local GP practices are struggling due to a shortage of GPs in the local area.

‘To win this award tonight is such a great honour and I’m delighted that all the hard work, commitment, dedication that I have put in personally and as part of the pharmacy team has been recognised. I’m very grateful to have won the award.’ Maree Ferguson, Cadham Pharmacy Health Centre, Glenrothes

‘It’s massively important for a company like TEVA to support independent pharmacies in Scotland. It’s also great to see people coming through to win Pharmacist of the Year for the support they are giving to the community.’ Russell Leith, Teva UK Limited
