CHAMBER SOCIAL: INSIDER CHAMBER INSIDER
Name: Helen Hart Job Title: Head of Member Services
You will no doubt be wondering what makes me qualified to take on this newly-created role for your Chamber of Commerce. As I see it one of the key qualities required is to relate to a wide range of people across all business sectors and at all levels. From a very young age I have
had a keen interest in people, probably borne from the fact that I was brought up in so many different places and had to adapt quickly to new environments and communities. My father’s job as a clergyman took us to such diverse places as Little Aden (in the Yemen) the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire and then to East London from where I travelled to school in Westminster on the tube every day. This upbringing has also made me very independent! My first roles were in the Civil
Service based in the City of London with the secretariat responsible for setting salaries for MPs, Judiciary, Armed Forces and doctors and dentists. As well as meeting many interesting people I learned the fundamental administration and organisational skills which have held me in good stead throughout my varied career. Since then I have owned and
run my own small business, a plant and garden centre in Essex, and managed corporate and
charity golf events as well as weddings for a golf and country club in Nottinghamshire. When an opportunity arose to become involved in developing future talent I jumped at it and, as an assessor, I loved being able to pass on my experiences and knowledge to young apprentices. As the organisation I trained with grew my role developed too and within a few years I was leading a team of over 40 assessors throughout the country as a member of the strategic management team. When we moved to Devon in
2010 I joined GHQ Training in Plymouth where, as Commercial Manager, I was able to combine my passion for apprenticeships with the opportunity to reach out and engage businesses in the benefits of employing apprentices and developing the skills of their existing employees. I am very much looking
forward to getting to grips with my new role, representing member views and doing my best to ensure the services we offer are the ones you recognise as value to your business. Please do get in touch and let me know how I can help.
