CHAMBER INVOLVE: MAYFLOWER 400

Be a part of history and get involved with Mayflower 400

Plymouth’s Mayflower 400 programme for 2020 will include a major cultural programme funded by Arts Council England and others and a wide range of activities that the community can get involved in. 2020 is the 400th anniversary of

the Mayflower voyage, one of the most influential journeys in global history and a defining moment in the shared history of Britain, the US and the Netherlands. Thirteen towns and cities from all three countries will work together, creating a huge programme of events and activities in the run-up to and throughout 2020, themed around the four key Mayflower values of freedom, imagination, humanity and future. Plymouth was the Mayflower’s

final departure point in the UK and the city is the lead partner in the commemorations. Arts Council England have also

given £700,000 funding for four key projects. The Wampanoag, the native people of Massachusetts who played a vital role in the Mayflower story, will partner in many of the projects.

Key Mayflower 400 Events Illuminate Spectacular light-based festival Illuminate will kick off the Mayflower commemorative year in November 2019 and close it in 2020.

Mayflower Ocean Festival The Mayflower Ocean Festival will celebrate Plymouth’s status as Britain’s Ocean City in May 2020, bringing together the world-class transatlantic Transat, OSTAR and TWOSTAR sailing races along with Pirates Weekend Plymouth.

Mayflower Week An amazing week of activity in September 2020, including: • Mayflower Ceremony • Mayflower Muster • A visit from the Matthew, a replica 15th Century tall ship

• Daily fly-bys • An international field gun competition

• The Navy’s Rehabilitation Triathlon (traditionally held in Lympstone but transferred to Plymouth for 2020)

Mayflower Ceremony A four-nations civic ceremony attended by representatives from the UK, US, Netherlands and Wampanoag.

Mayflower Muster In 2020, we will celebrate Plymouth’s naval heritage in partnership with the US and Dutch Armed Forces to create a spectacular festival.
