Recognition for Plymouth plasterer
A 21-year-old plasterer from Plymouth with learning difficulties has gained national recognition for his incredible natural talent. James Daley never thought he would become a
plasterer or ever find himself in the Houses of Parliament receiving national recognition of his talents. However, when participating in a Plymouth City Council employment skills initiative to introduce young people to potential new experiences, he soon discovered an appealing and successful career awaited him. Dubbed ‘Summer Mix’, the council led initiative is designed to invite young people to try new activities. James, who was unsure of his chosen career path at the time, took part in the scheme and soon discovered his natural flair for plastering. Empowered by his experience, James enrolled at Construction Training South West College and with the support and encouragement of those around him swiftly begun to enjoy success. Upon completion of his NVQ Level 1 course, James
was offered a permanent position with Plymouth-based building contractor Classic Builders. Renowned for its commitment to employing talented local staff, the senior management team at Classic Builders were keen for James to join their team. James seized the opportunity and enrolled on a modern apprenticeship to continue his career development. In 2018 James’ talents caught the attention of the
judging panel for Plymouth’s Construction Apprentice of The Year award where he reached the final (along with another Classic Builders’ apprentice).
James gained further recognition and praise from
the judges at The Young Builder of the Year Awards. He received a Highly-Commended Award in the 18-
24 year-old category and was the highest awarded plasterer in the United Kingdom. The awards ceremony was hosted at the Houses of
Parliament in London and James and his fellow finalists enjoyed a private tour of Westminster and a VIP experience on the CocaCola London Eye as part of their prize.
James said: “It can be a bit daunting when you’re
younger and trying to pick a career path but I’m proof that by trying different activities and working hard you can find a job you enjoy. “I am so proud of my achievement and career, I
would never have thought of becoming a plasterer if it weren’t for the Summer Mix initiative. “I want to thank Plymouth City Council, Construction
Training South West and especially Classic Builders for encouraging and supporting me to get this far.” Classic Builders Director Adam Brimacombe added:
“Everyone at Classic Builders is extremely proud of James and his achievement. “We embrace diversity and employ those who work
hard and show a desire to succeed. We then support and nurture each member of our team to develop their career at a pace comfortable to them. “James is a great example of this. We would like to
say a huge congratulations to him for doing so well.” Visit:
