INSTRUCTORS Dartmouth at work

FITNESS

If your New Year’s resolution to get fit is already a distant memory – here’s some inspiration! We sent Steph Woolvin to three local exercise classes to see what people are doing to try and stay in shape in Dartmouth and Kingswear in 2019…

Kari-Ann Webb SPINNING INSTRUCTOR

Sum up spinning in a few sentences….

A spin class is a high intensity cycling workout on stationary bikes. You work in a group and adjust your settings to make it harder when the instructor says it’s time to climb a hill or a mountain!

Is it challenging? You can make it as hard or easy as you want. You don’t have to keep up with everyone. I think spinning has a bad press, with people believing it’s a hard-core activity for the super fit, but it’s not. All abilities can come and you can start at a level you feel comfortable with and work up from there. It really is good fun.

Where and when are the classes? Thursdays at 9.15am and 6pm and Fridays at 9.30am. They’re all at Dart- mouth Leisure Centre and run by me.

Do you have to motivate the class? I do a lot of “woo wooing” to spur everyone on! They all come because they care about their health and they give it all they’ve got, but we all need a bit of encouragement when it gets tough. I make it as fun as possible by putting on motivational music and adding in a bit of chat as we go.

Why is spinning good for you? It helps burn calories, build muscle definition, and increase your cardio endurance. It’s also a great stress reliever.

How many people turn up? About 20 per class, which is super. It’s all ages from teenage girls to 70-year-old men.

What do you need to bring to class?

Just a bottle of water. You can wear gym kit or loose fitting clothes.

How long have you been running the class? Four years. Quite a few of my spinning class members have been with me from the start so they must enjoy it!

What other classes do you run here? Aquafit, circuits, pump, aerobics and a swim school class.

Have you always been an instructor? No, I used to work at the Flavel doing their accounts. I have four children and after the second I got postnatal depression so I decided to start running and never stopped. I ran the London Marathon twice! I joined a couple of classes at the lei-

sure centre and enjoyed it so much I decided to do a fitness course at South Devon College and then a degree in health and fitness at Plym- outh Uni. I started out covering a couple of aerobics classes and now I’m doing 11 classes a week!

Where do you live? In Dartmouth - only 10 minutes walk from the leisure centre.

What is the last thing you watched on TV? I’m really into Luther. My youngest has a cold so she slept for two and half-hours yesterday whilst I caught up on all of series three!

What is the boldest thing you’ve ever done? Running a marathon nine months after having a baby!

What is on your bucket list? To travel to Australia, climb to Everest Base Camp and run an ultra-marathon (any race longer than the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles).

Describe yourself in three words… Loud, crazy and fun.

What is the first thing you do when you get up? Kiss my children.

Tell us one thing people may not know about you? I secretly like Dolly Parton!
