League of Friends Dartmouth and District Healthcare Carol Lingard, Chairman writes; I felt I needed to let the people of

Dartmouth and District know that we are still functioning as a charity raising funds for the community. Since the closure of Dartmouth Hospital in 2017 we have been involved in the various meetings to try to work out what we need in the town and how it can be delivered. All the services that were operating from Dartmouth Hospital are now being given through Dartmouth Clinic, apart from daycare, which latterly was running down as there were very few clients using it. The other is the loss of beds, which is a major issue and we have at last got an agreement with the Trust that there is a need for intermediate care beds in the town. We have one care home actually in Dartmouth and another out in Strete; the need for another facility that can offer the beds is essential.

We have spent quite a lot of ‘your’ money for things required in the

community; physio equipment, doppler machine for the district nurses, a ‘headlight’ for the ENT specialist. We were approached by the medical practice to fund a defibrillator for outside the building as they are not able to let theirs leave the premises in an emergency. This seemed a request we could not refuse. We were also asked by the outdoor swimming pool for a donation as they were badly in need of a new pool vacuum. We thought about it long and hard and decided that if it helped to keep the pool open for more hours in the summer then it would encourage the children to get the exercise they need. With such a glorious summer it has proved worthwhile.

An idea was discussed to offer a voucher scheme for swimming in the

Indoor pool and we funded the initial cost for this. If it proves a success and the vouchers are taken up, we may well fund another year.

We have 3 main fund raising events each year, our Horse Racing in the

Stoke Fleming Village Hall, Summer Fete and Street collection; the rest of our money comes from the generous donations and legacies of local people.

We will continue to operate as a Charity so long as there is a need for us to do so and, if there is anyone who would like to join the Committee, please contact me by email dmhl@msn.com

Friends of Blackawton School have a busy spring ahead hoping to raise the £3,500 needed to weather-proof the forest school.
