Working in Partnership AWARDS Supported by BANNSIDE PHARMACY, PORTGLENONE

Eoghan O'Brien and the team at Bannside Pharmacy with Brendan Moffatt, Sales Manager, Community Pharmacy, Bestways Medhub and Wardles

When Bannside Pharmacy received more than £2000 from the Diabetes UK NI Innovation & Improvement Fund to run a programme to help people with type 2 diabetes to achieve better control and/or reversal of their condition, it was immediately obvious that this was going to be a programme that would require input from a wide range of healthcare professionals.

While pharmacists Eoghan O’Brien and Ryan Graham were very much involved in the practicalities of the project - such as signing people up and assessing them throughout - they did so in conjunction with Dr Rebecca Houghton, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Lead for Clinical Health Psychology at the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, who looked at the psychological issues

behind the challenges that the participants faced.

Physical activity coach Leslie McLaughlin from Mid & East Antrim Council was heavily involved in the provision of the exercise element of the project, involving all participants in one hour of physical activity during each weekly three-hour session, while Nora O’Neill, Community Development Worker at Portglenone Enterprise Group helped to organise the facilities at the local Men’s Shed and also signposted those in the group towards local activities and programmes.

The rest of the staff at Bannside Pharmacy were also very much involved, with everyone assisting in flyer distribution and signposting suitably motivated people with type 2 diabetes to Eoghan and Ryan.

‘An integrated approach is the best way to move healthcare forward. I am so grateful to Clinical Psychologist Dr Becky Houghton, Community Development Worker Nora O'Neill, Fitness Coach Lesley McLaughlin, Diabetes Nurse Roisin McCullough and the brilliant staff I'm blessed with for demonstrating what's possible!’ Eoghan O’Brien

‘I am struck by just how much community pharmacy there is in NI. It seems that in NI everyone is joining together to advance the profession. As a pharmacist myself, it was fantastic to see both unity and achievement come together in such an enjoyable evening in a stunning venue’ Paul Insley, Bestway Medhub & Wardles
