Health Promotion AWARDS Supported by BANNSIDE PHARMACY, PORTGLENONE

Mark Lyonette, Chief Executive, National Pharmacy Association, with Eoghan O'Brien and the team from Bannside Pharmacy

Nutrition and physical activity are two of the most important elements of good health and wellbeing, impacting on it at so many different levels, and the team at Bannside Pharmacy work tirelessly to constantly reinforce this message to their patients. For that reason, over the past twelve months, the team has been involved in two initiatives in which nutrition and physical activity have been cornerstones.

The Portglenone Diabetes Partnership saw a group of ten patients with type 2 diabetes follow a programme designed to reduce their HBAI1c to 6.5 per cent or lower and to improve their fitness levels. In seven of the ten participants these objectives were successfully met.

Then, in September last year, the pharmacy organised a talk in a local

venue where highly-experienced English sports nutritionist, Gareth Zeal, not only talked about nutritional changes and supplements that could benefit patients, but offered free 20- minute nutrition consultations in the pharmacy treatment room for both staff and customers.

One pharmacy patient had been complaining about feeling very tired and run-down despite going to three cross-fit and two spin classes a week. The importance of not over- training and ensuring adequate quality food was explained, and the patient was recommended a range of supplements. He subsequently won the ‘Two Peaks Challenge’ of the Man of Sperrin cycle race and reported feeling better and with more energy than he had had in years.

‘Community pharmacy - the gateway to the NHS - has got so much potential in health promotion with the preventable/reversible lifestyle conditions that are adversely affecting so many people and draining resources. With proper funding we could save the NHS a fortune!’ Eoghan O’Brien

‘Coming to something like this is a fantastic way to see everyone celebrating all the fantastic work that community pharmacy does day in day out’ Mark Lyonette, Chief Executive, National Pharmacy Association
