Rug revolution!
Whatever sort of fl ooring you choose, a rug always adds the fi nishing touch and there’s never been a better choice than at the moment. The Chroma series from Floor Story [7] is based on one of contemporary women’s wear designer Kitty Joseph’s most recognised pieces, the Spectrum pleated skirt. “I wanted the rugs to carry a similar vein to my clothes, creating an immersive and therapeutic colour experience, with saturated tones that you can literally sink your toes into,” she explains, adding: “The Spectrum skirt proved the perfect muse: made from a large circular panel of sunray pleated fabric fanning out from the waist, with a sequence of colour radiating from the centre, in parallel with the sharp pleated forms.” Floor Story have also been working
with trifl e, a commercial interior design agency, to launch Colour Stories [6], rugs with delicately graduating colour schemes reminiscent of a Mark Rothko painting. Hand-tufted or hand-knotted using an intricate technique that Floor Story and its weavers have worked hard to perfect, wool or silk is fi rst
hand-dyed in up to 40 shades of the same colour for a smooth transition from light to dark. Once all the colours are lined up in order, each is mixed to the next for a gradual merging rather than hard bands of colour. And fi nally,
the latest design in the Atlantic series from the machine-woven rug maestro Louis de Poortere, Streaks [5] is a real talking point, featuring texture, distressed areas and intricate stitching inspired by the sandy shores and winter gales of the New Jersey shoreline. It gives the rugs a worn, vintage look that looks great in any setting. Jacquard woven and hand-fi nished in Belgium from cotton chenille and high gloss polyester yarns in fi ve colourways, it’s available in seven sizes from 60cm x 90cm up to 280cm x 360cm.
